Is it advisable to form an administrators’ union?

Each district and each individual employee must make their own decision on whether it is appropriate for employees to join together in a labor organization.  One distinct benefit is that union employees have the opportunity to collectively bargain for rights beyond those contained in the Education Code.  Under the California collective bargaining statute, employees have the right to negotiate a variety of items, including wages, hours of employment, health and welfare benefits (including medical insurance coverage), evaluation procedures, policies relating to grievances, leave, transfer, reassignment and layoff; as well as safety conditions and class size.  Our firm has successfully organized and arranged for the legal recognition of employee organizations for supervisory employees in the San Francisco and Oakland school districts.
